Host Links and Gweb R6.3 is available

Host Links and Gweb 6.3.0 is now available, supporting even more platforms and with many new features.

Features of this release:

New platform

Support for the 64 bit AMD/Intel x64_86, Linux kernel 2.x

This adds another platform to the range of powerful servers supported by Host Links. The list is now:

  • Intel Itanium 2, Linux kernel 2.x
  • Intel Itanium 2 Windows XP, Windows 2003
  • AMD/Intel x64_86, Linux kernel 2.x
  • Hewlett-Packard, HP-UX 11i v2

Companies looking for efficient, scalable and reliable network infrastructure solutions can now take advantage of the power offered by the next generation of servers. This release responds to the needs of the growing generation of highly demanding business applications and infrastructures including highly secure Internet environments with SSL encryption of network traffic.

GUFT enhancements

GUFT packages include all clients

From this release the GUFT UNIX/Linux and Windows clients are included in all the GUFT packages. Customers licensing GUFT server on either a UNIX/Linux server or a Windows server receive clients for both UNIX/Linux and for Windows. This applies also to the GUFT packages delivered as part of the GgatePlus packages.

Ggate enhancements

Ggate Monitor for display of Ggate usage

The Windows version of this release includes a new Ggate User monitor program, Ggate Monitor. The Ggate monitor increases the value of your Ggate installation by showing your Host Links administrator all active Ggate users and each user's session attributes in a 'tree-view' style. Your administrators can both monitor the use of your terminal network, and also check the status of individual users or sessions.

Ggate support for Telnet clients

Ggate now supports both Telnet and TNVIP clients. Host Links users with third party TNVIP and Telnet clients are able to take advantage of the performance available from G&R/Ggate mainframe connections. For both protocols Ggate supports a configurable local dialog for clients, enabling any client population to migrate to Ggate for higher throughput and better response times, even if they connect by script, macro or hard coded dialog that expects a specific Terminal Manager dialog.

Ggate multiple port support

Gate defaults to the following port usage for the three client protocols:

  • Ggate 30841 (SSL 30851)
  • TNVIP 7323
  • TELNET 23

but each of the protocols can be configured on up to four different ports for maximum flexibility in your terminal environment.

Gspool enhancements

Gspool history log

The history log increases the value of your Gspool installation by making it easier for your administrator to follow Gspool activity and make sure that print problems are resolved. The log is optionally updated each time a host session terminates, and contains session status information. The history log can be configured to record all print sessions, or only failing sessions.

Gweb enhancements

Gweb management of multiple sessions, and session switching

You can maximize the benefit of your Gweb connection by starting several host sessions from the same browser, and switching between the sessions by selecting the session name from a list. The list of currently active sessions is also presented in the screen that displays preconfigured sessions. If you go back to Gweb after losing contact, any sessions that you have previously started and that have not timed out are displayed, and you can simply resume work.

Gweb support for real function keys

Gweb becomes more like a real terminal. The JavaScript routines that control the keyboard have now been extended to support "real" function keys. All the PC function keys: F1, F2 etc. can be used directly, even though you are in a browser window.

Gweb new presentation method for better display of complex screens

Gweb combines maximum accuracy of presentation with minimum data across the network. A presentation method has been added that uses CSS extensively to make sure fixed text and input fields are displayed with the exact same sizes, to ensure screen output that is true to the original, while retaining a simple HTML code.

Gweb automatic and smooth screen refresh

Gweb now supports host applications that continually update the screen. The JavaScript routines that control the screen have now been updated to automatically refresh the screen when the host has sent a form to the browser but keeps the turn. The scripts run silently in the background and seamlessly update the screen whenever the host sends more data.

Gweb server support for name-based virtual hosts

The Gweb web server configuration has been extended to support name-based virtual hosts, where the configuration subset is selected based upon the host name part of the URL sent from the browser. The GwebS server-status screen has also been updated to display information on a per-hostname basis.

Performance and reliability

Further performance increases and scalability

All of the products have been subject to rigorous benchmark testing both in-house and in cooperation with our partners. Our in-house load generation capacity has been significantly increased to provide us with test-bed capability for throughput and response-time testing beyond that needed by even our most demanding customers. Host Links on Open Systems platforms delivers market-leading scalable performance from the smallest 32-bit servers up to the largest 64-bit servers on the market, enough to replace the largest proprietary front-end systems.

New records for reliability under high load

Our in-house benchmarking systems have subjected this release to weeks of continuous testing under high load. The result is a release that will satisfy the strictest requirements as regards reliability under continuous high load.
