G&R at Bull Customer Briefing

Bull replaced its annual Summit 2002 Conference with a smaller, more focused, Bull Customer Briefing held on May 1 and 2, 2002. This Bull Customer Briefing incorporated many of the agenda items originally planned for Summit 2002, and was held at the Hyatt Regency Resort at Gainey Ranch in Scottsdale, Arizona.

Gallagher & Robertson participated with Michael Sandøy (General Manager) and Jim Gallagher (Technical Director). Jim spoke in the Plenary session with the topic:

  • "Internet or Core Operations?
    Both Please!"

Note that the answer to the question was originally.....

"Both," and then, so as not to seem greedy, he added, "But don't bother about the bread, please."

...but went right over somebody's head. I saved most of it in the longer version of the topic. If you are wondering what in the world this is all about, try chapter two in:

Plenary Session presentation

Internet or core operations? "Both, but don't bother about the bread please"

When Rabbit asked Winnie-the-Pooh if he would like honey or condensed milk with his bread, the Pooh gave what has become the classic answer when asked to choose between two goodies. 'Yes please, both' is the somewhat inaccurate Norwegian translation, but it gets the point across. Many government, financial and industrial organizations know that their core operational systems, today and for the foreseeable future, are best run on mainframes with the infrastructure and backup necessary to guarantee the availability of these critical applications. At the same time they see the need to integrate these systems with an Internet presence in order to broaden and simplify contact with customers, suppliers, the general public and their own employees. G&R provide a full range of products for access to mainframe systems, from traditional terminal emulation, through web-enabling mainframe applications for browsers, to Java Enterprise Edition access for new applications.
